I'd say he took dual studies in both law and medicine; given that his backstory is fairly open to being modified I would consider it being as such. He also does have experience in first aid, so that serves as another point towards that, not to mention with him being quick with timed actions it could translate into better instinctual coordination which I would wager also is good for a doctor-adjacent education. Also it's the 90s and I doubt they'd have been as strict with things lol.
